This is the blog of one Mr. Max Kinchen. I am a film student and noticer and sayer of funny things. People always used to misspell my last name, so now I'm taking it back. You have just entered, The Kitchen. If you can't handle the heat, GTFO.

Why I am not afraid of the Robot Apocalypse.

As most of you all know, Watson the computer recently beat out the best Jeopardy players in the world, leading us all to fear that the matrix and the terminator was coming true. The computers are getting smarter than us! we’re all doomed!

I admit I was in the same boat, I mean if Watson can outsmart Alex Trebek & Co, it’s only a matter of time before it daily doubles itself all the way to our missile defense system and sends us all to final jeopardy where the wager is the human race and the answer is: annihilate. Right?

Well not so fast. Today I received an email from my NYU email account telling me that I was at capacity for storage space for emails since I’ve really never deleted any emails off the NYU server since freshman year.

So, easy enough right? I simply started going through and deleting old emails that I didn’t need anymore to free up some space. Problem solved right?

Wrong. Not long after I began the process of deleting the emails, this happened:

As soon as I began deleting emails, I began receiving emails. For every email I deleted in order to get closer under quota, I received another email telling me that I was over quota. I’m sure it was just some glitch in the matrix er, programming but man it kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

And so, even with Watson gaining sentience and dominating the Potent Potable category, it is stupid little coding mistakes made by dumb people, the very people who would initially have to program the robots that would eventually rise up and take us over, that give me comfort that The Matrix will never happen. While computers may gain knowledge of information, whether we like it or not, human fallibility will always keep the robots and computers too dumb to become sentient.

Although I wouldn’t say no to a flying Keanu Reaves…
